Pakistan’s goods transporters have postponed their proposed nationwide strike for 40 days following discussions with federal and provincial authorities. While progress has reportedly been made on several demands, one important financial concern remains unresolved: withholding tax on the transport sector.
Transport representatives have sought relief from withholding tax alongside reductions in diesel costs, toll taxes and other operating burdens. According to the discussions reported, the Federal Minister for Communications has assured the transporters that the withholding-tax issue will be taken up with the Finance Minister and that a committee will be formed to consider the matter.
For businesses, the issue goes beyond the transport sector alone. Any change in the tax cost of transportation can ultimately affect freight rates, supply-chain costs and the cost of moving goods across the country. The next few weeks will therefore be important in determining whether the ongoing consultations result in an actual tax measure or whether the existing withholding-tax framework continues unchanged.
