The withdrawal of tax exemptions previously available to the former FATA and PATA regions has once again come under discussion in the Senate. Lawmakers raised concerns regarding the impact of withdrawal of these concessions on the merged districts, while also highlighting the broader economic and developmental challenges faced by these areas.
The Government, however, maintained that the earlier tax exemption regime had been subject to misuse and had also created concerns among businesses operating in other parts of the country. According to the Government’s position presented before the Senate, chambers of commerce outside the exempt regions had raised concerns regarding the competitive advantage enjoyed by businesses benefiting from such exemptions.
Importantly, the Government has indicated that it remains willing to engage with representatives and relevant stakeholders from FATA and PATA before taking further decisions. For businesses operating in the merged districts, any future consultation or policy adjustment could have significant implications for sales tax costs, pricing, competitiveness and investment decisions. The issue therefore remains an important tax policy development to watch.
