Tax Year 2026 Return Forms Revised Midway Through Filing Season

The FBR has introduced further amendments to the Income Tax Return Forms for Tax Year 2026 through SRO 495(I)/2026, despite the filing process already being underway. The amendments add four new parts, Part-II-ZE, Part-II-ZF, Part-II-ZG and Part-II-ZH, to the Second Schedule of the Income Tax Rules, 2002.

The timing of these amendments is important. Taxpayers and practitioners who had already prepared their returns on the basis of the earlier notified forms may now need to reassess whether the revised requirements affect any information, disclosures or computations already prepared. Those who have already filed may also need to examine whether the amendments have any relevance to their submitted returns.

With the filing deadline currently set for September 30, 2026, the changes have also renewed discussion around whether taxpayers should be given sufficient additional time whenever return forms are revised after the filing season has commenced. From a compliance perspective, certainty in return requirements is particularly important where taxpayers are expected to complete and reconcile substantial financial and tax information within a fixed statutory timeline.
