FBR Moves to Clear Rs. 126 Billion in Pending Refunds and Duty Rebates

A significant liquidity-related development has emerged for businesses awaiting long-pending tax refunds and duty rebates. Following discussions between the FBR and representatives of the business community, the FBR Chairman reportedly directed the payment of approximately Rs. 83 billion in sales tax refunds and Rs. 43 billion in duty rebates.

The meeting addressed both deferred refunds and older outstanding claims. According to the reported outcome, deferred refunds were expected to be paid within one to two months, while the larger stock of pending sales tax refunds and duty rebates was directed to be cleared within approximately two to three months.

The development is particularly important for exporters and businesses carrying substantial refundable tax balances, as prolonged delays in refunds can materially affect working capital and financing costs. While the proposed release of refunds is encouraging, taxpayers should continue to maintain complete reconciliations, supporting documents and claim records to facilitate verification and avoid unnecessary delays in settlement.
