The government has launched a mobile application for the Fixed Tax Asaan Scheme aimed at small traders and shopkeepers. Under the scheme, eligible retailers with annual sales of up to Rs200 million can opt for a fixed tax equal to 1% of declared annual sales, subject to a minimum annual tax of Rs25,000. Withholding tax already deducted through utility bills and other sources can be adjusted against the tax liability.
The scheme is designed to simplify tax compliance by allowing registration, return filing and tax payment through the mobile application. Participating retailers will also not be required to install POS machines or act as withholding agents, while the government has indicated protection from routine tax audits and visits for tax-related investigations, subject to the scheme’s conditions.
For small businesses, the real significance of the scheme is the shift towards a more simplified and digital compliance model. However, traders should carefully assess whether the fixed-tax option is commercially beneficial compared with the regular tax regime before opting in. The choice should be based on actual turnover, existing withholding taxes and the taxpayer’s overall tax position—not merely on the apparent simplicity of the scheme.
