OVERLOADED TRUCKS FACE TOUGHER ENFORCEMENT: GOVERNMENT ORDERS STRICT AXLE LOAD CONTROLS

The federal government has ordered stricter enforcement of axle load limits, with particular attention to vehicles leaving Karachi Port. The objective is to prevent overloaded trucks from entering the national road network at the starting point of their journey.

The National Highway and Motorway Police, traffic authorities and National Highway Authority have been directed to maintain round-the-clock vigilance at weigh stations. A transparent accountability mechanism is also to be developed to monitor weigh-station performance and close enforcement loopholes.

Heavy financial penalties have been proposed to remove the economic benefit of carrying excess loads. Transporters, importers and logistics operators may therefore need to reassess vehicle allocation, freight contracts, cargo splitting and delivery timelines, as stricter enforcement could increase the number of trips required for heavy consignments.
